Many of us could not think of anything more ideal than travelling the world in search of the best wine trails. Due to the sheer number of wine regions, we’ve distilled these creating a list of world best wineries that are sure to please the most discerning palette.

    France

Where else in the world would you start but in France, the biggest wine producer in the world. The Bordeaux region in the southwest is the most high profile and glamorous of the French wine trails, with its medieval cellars and caves. Visit the prestigious grape grower, Société Duboscq of Château Haut-Marbuzet, who offers wine aficionados free visits to his family’s cellars followed by a complimentary wine degustation.

The Loire Valley in central France is renowned for its winemaking heritage. One of the most highly respected wineries for any traveller to visit is Couly-Dutheil in the Chinon region. Their Cabernet Francs and Blancs can be found in leading restaurants throughout France and abroad.

While in France you cannot go past visiting the region of Champagne, meeting with local producers of Taittinger. According to travel observers it’s one of the few areas still controlled by members of the founding family whose involvement in wine production dates back to 1930.

    Italy

Hot on the heels of France in terms of winemaking credentials is Italy. Its natural beauty, historic splendour and climate make it the perfect place to wonder through stunning vineyards. Visit the Grumello wine estates in Lombardy in the north – a region well known for its sparkling wines. Here you will also find the Grumello Castle and a traditional olive press.

While in the cooler north, you would do well to visit the Ceretto Aziende Vitivinicole winery in Alba, Piedmont, not far from the city of Turin. The Ceretto family has been making wine for three generations, producing some of the best drops including the young Nebbiolo d’Alba, rich Barbaresco and deep, earthy, complex Barolo.

Last, but certainly not least, Tuscany is a must-see for wineries including that of Villa Vignamaggio located in Greve in Chianti, which is highly regarded for its Sangiovese. This villa is surrounded by an elegant Italian garden set in the picturesque Chianti countryside, and offers a glimpse into country life during the Renaissance period.

    USA

It may come as a surprise to some that America is the biggest consumer of wine in the world and the Napa Valley, in sunny California, produces some stellar Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. Recommended wineries include Palmaz, Hall Rutherford and Chappellet. These wineries are quite spectacular with impressive structures and wine ‘caves’ to explore, as well as quirky art collections and charismatic hosts.

Discover the most delicious blends and exclusive wines with the help of your personal travel manager, who can help create your own wine trail.
