Discover the wonders within your own backyard

Discover the wonders within your own backyard

Australia is home to some of the most diverse, beautiful landscapes and unforgettable experiences. Despite this, the vast number of Australians have never climbed the Harbour Bridge, watched the changing colours of Uluru at sunset, or seen the Twelve Apostles. With so much to see and do on your doorstep, now is the time to book a staycation.

This popular term, coined for holidays spent travelling around your own backyard, has seen many Australians swap their annual overseas vacation for more regular domestic short breaks. Here are some tips from our personal travel managers on the rewards of a staycation.

    Hit the road jack

Road trips are remembered as some of the best trips a person can take, whether it’s solo or in a group. Evoke some nostalgia by taking your children on a family holiday to a place you regularly visited as a child.

    Stop and smell the roses

If jumping in the car for a few hours is something you’d rather skip, then become a tourist for a day and explore things you may usually rush past. When in Sydney, discover Milk Beach in Vaucluse – a secluded beach with jaw-dropping views of Sydney’s famous harbour. Alternatively, head to the Island State and visit Trousers Point which is easily accessible from anywhere in Tasmania. This is arguably one of Australia’s most pristine beaches. Its white sand and clear waters mimic the isolation and tranquillity of somewhere far more tropical.

    Relaxing and stress-free

Choosing to holiday at home is a highly effective way to relax, unwind and reduce some of the stress associated with overseas travel. Leave the 9-5 distractions behind and switch off from work mode. Even if this means turning off your mobile phone, or leaving the laptop at home, these bold steps will force you to immerse yourself in your new setting, allowing you to feel refreshed upon return.

Local food, sport and music festivals are a great way to reconnect with friends and family whilst getting your cultural fix. More and more events are popping up in regional parts of Australia, such as the national celebration of Groovin the Moo, A Day on the Green set amongst the vineyards of Hunter Valley, and Mudgee’s Polo in the Paddock.

People looking to escape the hum of city life can travel to the Northern Territory and experience the wildlife paradise of Cape Crawford. Spend your days hiking across the red plains, discovering the Lost City and bathing in serene thermal pools.

    Last minute to win it

Taking advantage of special offers at short notice can save you money and add some spontaneity to your life. Some of our top short break destinations include:

    • The Blue Mountains – less than two hours outside of Sydney, this area is home to quaint towns like Leura, incredible landmarks including the Three Sisters and Jenolan Caves, and amazing walking trails.
    • Margaret River – step outside of Perth and discover premium wineries, world-class restaurants, spectacular beaches, and inspirational artisans.
    • Cairns – Although its crocodile inhabitants will keep you out of the coastal beaches, the town has a fantastic pool along the esplanade which is surrounded by several great eateries. And you can’t go past the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef.
