Norway is famous for its fjords, still blue lakes that stretch deep inland, often with cliffs towering either side. Two out of three of the longest fjords in the world, the Hardangerfjord and the Sognefjord are both located in Norway. Whilst fjords may sound untamed and wild, they’re surprisingly easy to explore, either on your own or with a guided tour. Trails vary from simple mountain hikes to daring glacier walks across the ice. And hidden deep within you’ll find small villages, each with their own distinctive culture.
Waterfalls in Norway are renowned for their power and size, with a steady supply of aqua coming from its fjords, lakes, glaciers and mountains. The historical Steinsdalsfossen, the largely undiscovered Månafossen and the Vøringsfossen waterfalls are three of our top picks.
Norway is home to many a broken island-chain and endless archipelagoes where the fjords meet the sea. If you put together Norway’s 63,000 miles of fjords, bays, and island shores in a single line, it would circle the planet two and a half times. From the Lofoten Islands’ dramatic mountain peaks to Svalbard’s remote terrain of glaciers and frozen tundra, the hardest decision will be which island to visit first.
At the farthest reaches of the Norwegian coastline is a road where the land ends and an expansive ocean begins. The Atlantic Ocean Road is part of Norway’s County Road 64, and curves through bridges and theatrical landscapes.
Jotunheimen National Park is situated in Eastern Norway and covers an area of 3,500 square kilometres. Featuring the largest concentration of mountains higher than 2,000 metres in Northern Europe, Jotunheimen is home to waterfalls, rivers, lakes and glaciers, as well as Norway’s highest mountains, Galdhøpiggen and Glittertind. The national park is ideal for cross-country and alpine skiers, cyclists and climbers who revel in the experience of undisturbed nature and fresh air. Other popular activities in Jotunheimen include glacier walking, rafting, caving, canyoning and bike riding.
