  • Balloon Over the World’s Driest Desert

Take to the skies of San Pedro de Atacama for a unique ballooning experience.

San Pedro de Atacama is the world’s driest desert, but you won’t find an arid wilderness here. From vast salt flats to flamingo-flocked lakes, this extraordinary region is bursting with life – and what better way to take it all in than from the bird’s-eye view of a hot air balloon.

Hot air balloon with Viva Expeditions

Enjoy an unforgettable balloon experience across the Atacama Desert with Viva Expeditions. Before taking off on your luxury balloon flight, you can enter the semi-deflated balloon for a unique photo-op, then once in the sky, you’ll learn about the geological and anthropological significance of the area. Watch the sun rise behind the Linancabur Volcano, see the stone fortress of Pukará de Quitor and marvel at the Cordillera de la Sal (Salt Mountains). After an hour floating across the desert, touch down and celebrate the experience with a champagne breakfast.

Although the experience is usually a shared one, for an exclusive experience, you can choose to organise a private balloon flight.

    Explore

After breakfast, it’s time to explore the region up close with a visit to the Salar de Atacama (Atacama salt flats), one of the world’s largest salt lakes, where the lagoons are flocked with everyone’s favourite pink bird, the flamingo. Next, venture to the incredible Valley of the Moon, known for its lunar-esque rock formations, and sandboard down the giant dunes of Death Valley. For magical star-gazing, head to one of the famous astronomical observatories in the region, or if you’re a fan of water sports, don’t miss the northern coastal region: its stunning, sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters are sheer perfection, waiting to be enjoyed.
