Photography tips for capturing memorable travel photos

Do you struggle taking photographs when you travel?

Do you take the same style of images on your camera when travelling?

Here are some handy tips to help you capture memorable moments whilst holidaying.

Candid images – Candid images are taken in the moment, you don’t need to wait until everyone is looking at the camera and you don’t need to continue to ask the family for their cheesy grin.  Capturing real life is a wonderful memory trigger when you look back at your images in a few years.

Mixing people & objects – Of course, you are going to take images of your family/friends.  Don’t forget to capture landmarks, landscapes, aeroplanes, meals, etc.  These help you create depth and variety in your travel stories.

Light – I am sure you have heard of Golden Hour (the ‘perfect’ light at sunrise and sunset).  This is sometimes not an ideal time to be out and about (especially when you travel with your family).  If you can’t be in the flattering light of the golden hour, ensure you find shade when you are outdoors – this will prevent squinting of eyes and the harsh sun interfering with your camera.  When you are inside, try to use windows.  Natural light will create a more pleasing tone in your images.

Rule of thirds – Most modern cameras have a grid function in the settings menu.  Turn this on and practice placing objects/people over the intersecting lines of the grid.  This gives a more interesting perspective.

Different angles – Try using various angles when taking photos.  Like getting down close to the ground, looking down on the situation, or even just an odd angle you wouldn’t normally use.  Experiment and have fun – remember, you are capturing memories.

Get in the shot – make sure you have someone take a few images with YOU in the photo.  You don’t want to get home and find you have no images of you and those amazing landmarks/scenery.

You can practice any of these points before you begin your adventure.  The more comfortable you feel with experimenting, the more creative you will be on your travels.
