Overwater bungalows, water so clear you can see the reef below from your villa, complete privacy, and the kind of relaxation that makes time slow down – the Maldives has long been one of those destinations people dream about in terms of “one day”. For many travellers, the hesitation isn’t about wanting to go, it’s about whether it’s the right moment, and whether the experience will genuinely feel worth the investment.
This isn’t an everyday holiday for many people; it’s a milestone destination, a bucket list, one that deserves to feel special rather than stressful. With hundreds of resorts, widely ranging inclusions, and multiple ways to get there, planning can quickly become overwhelming, which is where a travel manager makes all the difference.
I’m a big fan of breaking up a trip into manageable stages so travel days feel more comfortable and less tiring. By spacing flights and connections sensibly, travellers spend less time dealing with logistics and more time enjoying where they’re going, which makes a noticeable difference to the overall experience.
In late 2025, I helped a couple plan their holiday combining Singapore and the Maldives. The clients wanted to celebrate a significant wedding anniversary and felt drawn to the Maldives, but rather than trying to piece everything together themselves, they handed the idea to me, trusting that I would turn their Maldives holiday dream into a reality. My role was to turn their wish list into a seamless, well-paced journey. I focused first on availability and location in the Maldives, addressing challenges such as jet lag, transfers, and availability on a specific date to create a comfortable, memorable anniversary trip without unnecessary complications.

Getting to the Maldives from Australia via Singapore
One of the easiest and most reliable ways to reach the Maldives from Australia is via Singapore, which is around 7 hours from Adelaide. One of the reasons Singapore works so well in combination with the Maldives is how naturally it breaks the journey. Spending a night there on the way through helps travellers arrive in the Maldives rested and early in the day, allowing plenty of time for transfers to their island.
While many travellers choose to break the journey in Singapore, we opted for something different. Because the couple wanted to fly business class for their special anniversary, we decided to continue directly via a short transit in Singapore with Singapore Airlines and instead break the trip in Malé.
As the travellers said:
“Flying business class was an absolute luxury that is going to be hard to match moving forward.”
Why an Overnight Stay in Malé Makes Reaching the Maldives Easier
The flight from Singapore to Malé takes around four to four and a half hours, making it a comfortable and straightforward next leg after a stop in Singapore. When arriving in the Maldives, all international flights land at Velana International Airport, located beside the capital, Malé. From there, depending on where your resort is located, onward travel in the Maldives is by speedboat, seaplane or a short domestic flight followed by a boat transfer. This is why the choice of a Maldives resort is so important in shaping your experience.
Because my couple had chosen to fly through on the same day, they arrived in the Maldives after 10 pm, so after landing in Malé, they stayed one night at
Marukab Plaza, a modern, comfortable hotel close to the airport. It’s a small detail, but one that makes a big difference to how your destination feels from day one. Choosing to stop overnight means you avoid a long, tiring transfer after a long flight. Instead, you start your first day in the Maldives rested and ready, with extra time to enjoy a morning stroll on the beach or a lazy breakfast.

Simplified Island Access via a speedboat transfer directly to the island resort
Choosing a resort within easy reach of Malé removes the need for additional flights or long waits and allows for a straightforward speedboat transfer directly to the island. This keeps the journey simple and costs down, since helicopters and seaplane transfers can add significant extra fees. By choosing a resort accessible by speedboat from Male, you arrive quickly, and you can settle into island life almost immediately.
Most transfers in the Maldives are arranged directly by the resort, and this is an important factor when choosing where to stay. Depending on the location, transfers are coordinated to align with your international arrival and departure times. The speedboat transfer from Malé (Velana International Airport) to
Anantara Veli Maldives Adults Only Resort typically takes about 25 to 35 minutes. If you’re looking for some tours, Viator has some great options you can book independently from Male such as the
Maldives Adventure Tour or you can arrange tours through your resort.
Anantara Veli Maldives Resort: Adults-Only Overwater Villas
The centrepiece of the holiday was a stay at
Anantara Veli Maldives, an adults-only island resort in the South Malé Atoll that consistently delivers on both atmosphere and ease. With overwater pool villas, calm swimming conditions and a refined, relaxed feel, it is particularly well-suited to couples celebrating an anniversary or on their honeymoon.
The couple stayed in an Overwater Pool Villa, one of the most sought-after accommodation styles in the Maldives, as part of an all-inclusive package. Food and wine in the Maldives are expensive mainly because of the island’s remote location. The islands have no large-scale food production, so almost everything is imported, then transported again to individual resort islands by boat or seaplane. Alcohol is also heavily regulated and taxed, which further increases costs once you are on the island.
This is why all-inclusive packages often make sense in the Maldives. While the upfront price may seem large, having an all-inclusive package removes the uncertainty of daily spending and lets you enjoy meals, drinks, and experiences without constantly worrying about the cost. Anantara Veli offers different levels of inclusive, so if you don’t want 24/7 access, you can limit the hours it is available for a lower cost.
Their feedback says it all:
“The island in the Maldives was exceptional, the accommodation was simply amazing and the food unbelievable – we could not fault anything we ate or drank and were glad we went with the all-inclusive package.”
Anantara Veli and Anantara Dhigu: Two Islands, One Stay

An added benefit of staying at Anantara Veli Maldives Resort is access to its sister property,
Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort, located just a short pontoon ride away. This effectively expands the experience without requiring a change of resort. Resort-hopping typically involves packing, checking out, and a significant travel ordeal between locations, which can eat into your relaxation time.
Here, you enjoy the best of two islands effortlessly. Guests can enjoy additional dining venues, beachfront restaurants, a sunset bar, and a wider range of leisure activities, while still returning to the quieter, adults-only environment of Anantara Veli at the end of the day. It is an elegant way to add variety without sacrificing calm.
Singapore: Finishing the Trip with Colour and Contrast
After the stillness of the Maldives, the trip finished with time in Singapore, staying at
JEN Orchardgateway by Shangri-La, right above Orchard Road and directly connected to the MRT. Singapore is energetic, full of colour, movement, and contrast, and delivers long bright days spent discovering bustling districts, exploring gardens and markets, and enjoying the city’s food scene. It was intentionally different from the Maldives, and that contrast is what made both destinations feel even more rewarding.
This hotel is ideal for travellers who want a central location, comfortable, modern rooms, walk-out convenience for exploring the city and easy transport access.
“Singapore was so so good. We were up and out by 9 and not back till 9-ish at night. We covered as much ground as possible and could have done with a couple of extra days.”
Why trips like this work
Holidays like this don’t come together by chance. My approach is always to start with what travellers actually want from the experience, then think carefully about how to make it work in practice. That means choosing flights that make sense, allowing enough breathing space between connections, and lining up transfers and resort stays so the trip feels calm rather than rushed.
Behind the scenes, this involves tasks such as holding a villa option for 48 hours to ensure availability and synchronizing speedboat schedules with your flight times. When those decisions are made well, everything runs quietly in the background, and travellers are free to enjoy their holiday.
“Thank you so much for the organisation of the trip and the work behind the scenes. I will be back in touch when we are next ready to travel.”
Frequently Asked Questions about Anantara Veli and travelling to the Maldives
Is Anantara Veli Maldives Resort adults only?
Yes. Anantara Veli is an adults-only Maldives resort, making it particularly popular for honeymooners, anniversary trips and couples seeking a quieter, more refined island atmosphere. While it offers access to its sister resort, Anantara Dhigu, Anantara Veli remains exclusively adults-only.
Is Anantara Veli all-inclusive?
Anantara Veli offers all-inclusive packages that include meals and beverages at selected restaurants and bars. Given the cost of food and alcohol in the Maldives due to import and logistics, many travellers find all-inclusive packages provide better value and a more relaxed experience overall.
Are overwater villas worth it in the Maldives?
For many travellers, yes, especially on a bucket list holiday. Overwater villas offer direct access to the lagoon, privacy and uninterrupted ocean views. At resorts like Anantara Veli, overwater pool villas offer guests the best of both worlds: the lagoon and their own private pool, a major part of the Maldives experience.
How do you get to Anantara Veli from Malé?
All international flights arrive into Velana International Airport. From there, Anantara Veli is reached by a speedboat transfer, which typically takes about 25 to 35 minutes, and is one of the simplest and most cost-effective transfer options in the Maldives. Being close to Malé avoids the need for seaplanes or domestic flights.
How long does it take to fly from Australia to the Maldives?
Many travellers from Australia fly via Singapore. The flight from Adelaide to Singapore takes around seven hours, followed by a four to four-and-a-half-hour flight from Singapore to Malé. Breaking the journey makes the trip more comfortable and reduces travel fatigue.
Is it better to stop in Singapore on the way to the Maldives?
For many travellers, yes. Singapore works well as a stopover because it breaks up the journey and allows travellers to arrive in the Maldives more rested. Some choose to stay overnight in Singapore, while others transit through and break the trip in Malé instead, depending on flight timing and personal preference.
Do I need a travel agent to plan a Maldives holiday?
You don’t need one, but many travellers choose to use a travel agent for the Maldives because of the number of variables involved. Resort location, transfer type, villa availability, inclusions and timing all affect both cost and experience. Having someone structure the trip around your priorities helps avoid costly mistakes and makes the journey feel far simpler.
Thinking about the Maldives?
If the Maldives has been on your “one day” list, pairing it with Singapore from Australia is one of the simplest ways to make it happen. It keeps the journey smooth while adding contrast without complexity. Availability for overwater villas is limited during popular travel periods, which is why having dates, routing and resort choice considered early makes such a difference.
