Last weekend was spent at Main Beach on the Gold Coast Qld in a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom accessible beachfront apartment. Norfolk Luxury Apartments on Main Beach Parade was home for 3 very relaxing days in which I managed to get some Vitamin D in before the deluge of a once in a thousand year (well maybe not quite) rain event decended upon us.
Norfolk Luxury Apartments are all individually owned, and the one I stayed in happened to be owned by a family whose Son is a wheelchair user. The apartment is on the sixth floor and has the most amazing ocean views, which if you are familiar with accessible accommodation you’ll know that this is a rarity as there are never any views… well except of the carpark or an alley full of garbage bins – true story! The balcony has been ramped for easy access, and there is plenty of room to enjoy the spectacular view.
The bedrooms consist of a main with king bed, accessible ensuite and ocean views, bedroom 2 has two single beds, and bedroom 3 has a double bed with enough room underneath to allow the use of a hoist if required.
All bedrooms are of a good size, especially the main – lots of turning space without having to rearrange any furniture.
I am a manual chair user and I must say that I did struggle a little when it came to the ensuite. As the complex was built in 1982, the accessible bathroom has been renovated by the owners in the best possible way for the small amount of room they had available – please see the attached photos. The opening into the shower is 650mm wide and my chair did fit, however I needed assistance to manouver towards the hand held shower rose, and to back out. There is a small bench seat off the wall which would be suitable for someone who is able to take some steps, but to transfer onto it from a wheelchair would prove to be difficult. The basin was also high but manageable. Please note there are no rails beside the toilet therefore a commode is probably the best way to go if you are used to this set up.
The apartment itself is huge with a modern kitchen and large dining area. If you are not one to stay in and eat, then good news – you are only a short stroll from cafes and restaurants of Tedder Avenue. Our favourite for lunch was Hot Shott Kitchen (avocado and fetta salad with a glass or 2 of Prosecco – delicious!), and Hard Coffee Main Beach for breakfast. For dinner we dined at the Southport Yacht Club on the first night, and stayed in on the following night and ordered pizza from Domani’s. Literally spoilt for choice when it comes to looking for somewhere to eat.
Norfolk Luxury Apartments has a pool and BBQ area which is accessed by a ramp, however there is no access into the pool itself. The entrance into reception is flat and the staff are amazing. They are more than happy to go above and beyond to make your stay as comfortable as possible – which I can vouch for firsthand with clients I have booked previously who needed extra equipment delivered, bed height adjustments etc. Nothing is too hard and is always met with a smile.
Overall this apartment is fabulous if you are looking for a family holiday or if you are travelling with support worker/s as this is not a pokey apartment. However, I would also say that unless you can walk a few steps or are happy to have help some help in the bathroom if you are a permanent wheelchair user, then you might find things a little difficult in that space. Personally – I’ll be back!
