My First River Cruise Was Anything But Slow!

My First River Cruise Was Anything But Slow!

Seven nights Budapest to Vilshofen with Low water levels, flight delays, missed flights, a 13-hour detour and one absolutely incredible 35,000-step day.

Welcome to my first river cruise with AmaWaterways!

I thought river cruising would be all about leisurely days, scenic sailing and sipping wine while watching Europe drift by. And yes, there was plenty of that. What I didn’t expect was just how active, adventurous and downright eye-opening the experience would be!

Budapest absolutely stole the show.

This city is magnificent, from its grand architecture and historic streets to those spectacular Danube views that make you stop in your tracks. It’s the sort of place that reminds you why travelling is so much more rewarding than simply looking at photos. If Budapest isn’t already on your list, consider this your nudge.

Of course, August 2026 had other plans. Low river levels meant adjustments, while flight delays, missed connections and a 13-hour detour tested my patience. But here’s the thing: it was all totally worth it.

Travel doesn’t always go to plan, and sometimes the unexpected becomes the story you tell long after you get home.

One day, I clocked up 35,000 steps!. So much for river cruising being a sedentary holiday! Between exploring beautiful European towns, discovering local history, enjoying guided excursions and wandering around cobbled streets, there was always something to do. You could be as active as you liked, or take things at a gentler pace.

And then there’s AmaWaterways itself. The onboard experience struck a lovely balance between comfort, excellent food, attentive service and the freedom to explore. Included excursions, knowledgeable local guides and the convenience of unpacking once while travelling between destinations make a real difference. You experience more of Europe without constantly changing hotels, organising transport or deciding where to eat every night.

So, is river cruising right for you?

If you love discovering new places, experiencing local culture, enjoying a little luxury and having the logistics taken care of, it deserves a place on your travel wish list. And if you think it might be too quiet or slow-paced, trust me – think again!

My biggest takeaway? The right itinerary and cruise line can completely change how you experience a destination. River cruising offers a wonderful balance of exploration and comfort, but choosing the right sailing, understanding seasonal conditions and having a plan when things change can make all the difference.

As a travel manager, experiencing it first-hand means I can help you decide whether it suits your travel style, rather than simply telling you what the brochure says.

Would I do it again? Absolutely.

I came home with tired feet, wonderful memories and a newfound appreciation for river cruising. Who knew seven nights on the river could deliver so much adventure?
