The Milan Duomo is one of the must-see sites in Milan, and most people include it on their visit to this fashion-forward city.
However, time is usually not on your side when you are travelling, so you might be tempted to miss the option to climb to the Duomo’s rooftop, the Terraces. Don’t!
We were in Milan in February on a rainy, cold day and were fortunate to find no queues. Climbing the stairs (about five floors) was cheaper than taking the lift.
You can access the stairs from the outside of the Duomo and walk up a circular marble staircase with tiny slit windows for light.
Once on the rooftop, you can walk amongst the 3400 statues, 135 Gargoyles and 700 figures that decorate the cathedral.
If you are there in summer, I recommend you purchase a skip-the-line timed ticket online HERE. There is also a large Duomo ticket office next to the Duomo.
Note: Be careful not to buy a ticket that includes the Duomo or Museum entrance if you have already been inside with your tour—just the Terrace entrance. Some group tours of Milan do include the Terraces. However, I recommend you book this yourself to linger and absorb the crazy beauty that took 600 years to build.
We spent around an hour walking around the rooftop of this incredible building, taking too many photos and gazing over Milan. While the inside of the Duomo is impressive, the Terraces are something else, and it was the highlight of our time in Milan.
