Discovering Paradise: 8 Things to Do in Sri Lanka

Discovering Paradise: 8 Things to Do in Sri Lanka

During my October 2019 trip to Sri Lanka, I developed a deep admiration for the country, captivated by its diversity and its ability to cater to various travel preferences. The experience left such a lasting impression on me that upon my return, I dedicated the following two months to crafting a 10-night itinerary, intending to host it in 2020. Unfortunately, we all know what happened and this was filed away and almost forgotten until I had a request recently for some clients. While organising their travel it to Sri Lanka it revived cherished memories, prompting me to emphasise why it’s a destination everyone should explore.

Nestled in the heart of South Asia, Sri Lanka is a mesmerising island nation that boasts a rich tapestry of culture, history, and natural beauty. From pristine beaches to ancient temples, the country offers a diverse range of experiences for travellers seeking adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion. Here are 8 things you should do in Sri Lanka to make the most of your visit.

1.Explore the Ancient City of Anuradhapura:

Step back in time as you wander through the ancient city of Anuradhapura, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Sri Lanka’s most significant archaeological wonders. Marvel at the colossal dagobas, intricate carvings, and sacred Bodhi tree, said to be the oldest recorded tree in the world.

2. Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress:

Dubbed the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” Sigiriya Rock Fortress is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. Ascend the steep staircase to reach the summit and be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding lush landscapes and ancient ruins.

3.Experience the Tea Plantations in Nuwara Eliya:

Escape to the cool highlands of Nuwara Eliya, where emerald-green tea plantations stretch as far as the eye can see. Take a guided tour to learn about the tea-making process, sip on freshly brewed Ceylon tea, and enjoy the scenic beauty of the rolling hills.

4. Wildlife Safari in Yala National Park:

For an unforgettable wildlife experience, head to Yala National Park, renowned for its diverse ecosystems and abundant wildlife. Hop on a safari jeep and keep your eyes peeled for elephants, leopards, sloth bears, and a myriad of bird species in their natural habitat.

5. Relax on the Beaches of Mirissa:

Sri Lanka is blessed with pristine beaches, and Mirissa is a true gem on the southern coast. Whether you’re a sunbather, surfer, or whale-watching enthusiast, Mirissa offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.

6. Horton National Park and World’s End

Discovering the natural wonders of Sri Lanka is an enchanting experience, perfectly embodied by Horton National Park and World’s End. In Horton National Park, the landscape unfolds with mist-clad mountains, rolling grasslands, and dense forests, creating a serene haven for nature lovers. The iconic World’s End, within the park, beckons with its breathtaking 880-meter cliff, offering not only a dramatic panorama but also a challenging yet rewarding trek.

7. Wander through Galle Fort:

A stroll through the charming Galle Fort is like stepping into a colonial-era time capsule. Explore the cobblestone streets lined with Dutch and Portuguese architecture, visit boutique shops, and savour a meal at one of the quaint cafes within the fort walls.

8. Blue Train Experience

Embark on an unforgettable adventure aboard Sri Lanka’s Blue Train for a journey filled with scenic beauty, historical charm, and luxurious comfort.
