Top Destinations- NT Top End

Whether you live in the Top End or planning a trip up north, there is no shortage of adventure. I could go on and on about all the markets, festivals, and national parks inand around Darwin, but for this blog I would like to share a few places that are all within driving distance from Darwin.

CRAB CLAW ISLAND

Only 135km from Darwin this resort caters to those who love the outdoors. You can easily spend a full day or a long weekend fishing, mud crabbing, bushwalking or just relaxing by one of their two pools. Crab Claw Island Resort has a variety of different style of cabins as well as camping facilities along with a full service restaurant and BBQ facilities for all guests.

We plan a weekend here every year and it never disappoints. We always reserve one of their 4 boats for the day which gives us a great opportunity to fish in the beautiful water and do a little crabbing. In the evening we relax on the patio of our cabin enjoying drinks with friends and then head to the restaurant for a delicious dinner. The next day we usually do a little fishing from the beach, relax with a swim in their pools and enjoy visits from some local kangaroos.

One of the great things about visiting Crab Claw Resort is that it is also close to Litchfield National Park. If you plan on staying here for a few days you can easily make day trips to some of the swimming holes or go for a bushwalk without having to venture too far away.

MARY RIVER WILDERNESS RETREAT

Located off the Arnhem Highway, this retreat is only about an hour and a half from Darwin. With 5 different types of accommodation as well as powered and unpowered camping sites you can accommodate any size of group. The Gecko Restaurant and Bar offers continential breakfast and A la carte lunch and dinner menu. There is also BBQ and kitchen facilities in the camping area.

Mary River Wilderness Retreat is another place we enjoy visiting for a night or full weekend. There are a number of activities available at the retreat including bushwalking or cycling, hiring a buggy or a boat to go down the Mary River where you can see a number of crocodiles, fish and birds. If you want to just relax there are 2 pools and shady areas to sit and read a book.

I recommend if you haven’t already done the Spectacular Jumping Crocodile Cruises you plan on stopping there either on your way to Mary River or back. A fun boat ride where you can see crocodiles up close and learn about the birds and wildlife found in this area of the Top End.
