The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection ILMA: Everything you need to know

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection ILMA: Everything you need to know

There are cruise ships, and then there are experiences that redefine what ocean travel can feel like entirely. The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection’s ILMA sits firmly in the second category, and I genuinely believe it is one of the most compelling luxury offerings in the world right now, for the right kind of traveller.

What sets ILMA apart?

There are plenty of beautiful ships in the luxury market. So what makes the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection worthy of the attention, and the investment? In my view, it comes down to four things: space, options, dining, and service, and ILMA delivers on all four in a way that is genuinely rare.

Space

The first thing guests notice after boarding is just how spacious everything feels. ILMA carries a maximum of 448 guests across 224 suites, which gives her one of the highest space-per-guest ratios of any ship at sea. The central gathering space, called The Living Room, acts as a warm, unhurried hub where guests come together for coffee, cocktails, and conversation throughout the day and into the evening, without ever feeling the crush of a crowd.

Beyond The Living Room, there are two pools, a full sized gym, a spa, fitness studios, and cycle studios. All suite categories come with private balconies, and even the entry-level Terrace Suites feel genuinely generous. At the top end, the Owner’s Suites offer around 96 square metres of interior living space plus an expansive private terrace. People who have sailed ILMA consistently say the same thing: they often wondered where everyone else was.

Options

Despite the intimate scale, guests on ILMA are never short of things to do. By day, there are fitness classes, lectures, and destination presentations. By evening, the entertainment choices are deliberately varied, ranging from live performances in The Living Room at cocktail hour, to a pianist on another deck, a guitarist accompanying dinner, a trio playing pop favourites, or late-night dancing.

When in port, ILMA’s shore excursion programme covers everything from a leisurely beach afternoon to snorkelling and kayaking adventures, challenging hikes, and the kind of private, customised experiences that money usually can’t buy on mainstream ships. Think racing an America’s Cup yacht in St Martin, or summiting the Pitons in St Lucia with a private guide.

But the feature that truly seems to capture everyone’s heart? The Marina Platform. When sea conditions allow, this retractable aft platform becomes a floating playground, complete with lounge chairs over the ocean, a saltwater pool, kayaks, stand up paddleboards, and sea scooters. It is reportedly the moment where even the most seasoned travellers feel like they are ten years old again.

Dining

With more than 50 chefs cooking for around 300 to 450 guests at any one time, the culinary standard on ILMA is exceptional. The five restaurants each have their own distinct identity:

  • Memori: Pan Asian cuisine and sushi bar, consistently among the most popular restaurants onboard. Do not leave without trying the chocolate cake.
  • Mistral: Mediterranean fare on Deck 10, with the option of indoor or outdoor dining, and views of the ship’s wake from the bar. A particular favourite for relaxed evenings at sea.
  • Seta Su Ilma: The ship’s showcase fine dining experience, an Italian tasting menu at Michelin level, available at a supplement and very much worth pre booking before your cruise.
  • Tides: The main dining room equivalent, with a wide-ranging menu that changes every three days, along with a private dining room for up to 16 guests.
  • Beach House: A relaxed, poolside option for casual dining, ideal during warm weather sailings.

There are also six bars open daily, and the bar at Mistral on Deck 10, with its open air views and easy pace, is widely considered the most atmospheric spot on the ship for a sundowner.

Service

This is where ILMA truly separates itself from the rest of the luxury market. The service philosophy is drawn directly from the Ritz-Carlton’s legendary land based hospitality model. “Ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen” is not just a tagline; it is genuinely the culture that guests experience from the moment they step aboard.

Close to half of all crew members on any given sailing come from land-based luxury hotels and resorts, many from Ritz-Carlton properties, which means they bring a hotel-calibre warmth and intuition that is rare on any ship. Preferences are noted and remembered. Guests are recognised by name throughout the voyage. The General Manager is present, engaged, and knows every guest personally by the end of a sailing.

With a staff to guest ratio approaching 1:1, ILMA simply cannot deliver anything other than highly attentive, personalised service. It is not a performance, it is the product.

Who is ILMA really for?

One of the most compelling things about the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is who it attracts. Around half of all guests on any ILMA sailing are first time cruisers, many of them experienced luxury hotel guests who have historically avoided cruising because of the associations they carry: crowds, buffets, entertainment that feels compulsory, and the sense of being one of thousands.

ILMA dismantles every one of those objections. There is no casino, no main theatre with a ticketed show, no announcements over a PA system. There are no crowds, no queues, and no buffet. If your clients love the Four Seasons or the Aman group, if they value privacy, extraordinary food, and service that anticipates rather than just responds, ILMA will feel completely familiar to them in the best possible way.

The average age of guests on ILMA is around 50 to 51, and drops below 50 on holiday and vacation sailings. This is a ship for discerning travellers who know what they want, and are willing to invest in it.

Where does ILMA sail?

ILMA operates a year round programme across two primary regions, with sailings ranging from five to eleven nights, and the option to combine consecutive voyages for a longer, more immersive journey.

Caribbean

The Caribbean season runs broadly from late November through to late March or April, with San Juan, Puerto Rico and Fort Lauderdale serving as the primary home ports. Itineraries visit some of the Caribbean’s most sought after destinations, including St Barts, Anguilla, Barbados, Antigua, Virgin Gorda, St Lucia, and more, with ILMA’s intimate size allowing her to call at ports that larger ships cannot access.

Europe: Mediterranean and Beyond

From late spring through summer and into autumn, ILMA moves to European waters, with a programme covering the Western Mediterranean, the Greek Isles, and beyond. The combination of ILMA’s scale and her curated port selection makes this an exceptional way to experience Europe’s coastlines without the compromises that come with larger ships.

Looking Further Ahead

With the addition of Luminara as the third vessel in the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection fleet, the brand has expanded significantly into new destinations. Asia Pacific itineraries, Hawaii and French Polynesia sailings from late 2026, and new European and Caribbean departures for 2026 and 2027 mean the options have never been broader.

My exclusive gift to you? A $500 shipboard credit per suite

As your Signature Travel Network Advisor, I have access to exclusive benefits that are simply not available when booking directly or through a standard travel agent. On select ILMA sailings, my clients receive a $500 USD shipboard credit per suite to spend however they choose, whether that is a treatment at the spa, a bottle of something special from the wine programme, or dinner at Seta Su Ilma.

On certain hosted sailings, clients may also enjoy a dedicated reception and the services of a Signature host throughout the voyage, adding another layer of personalised care to an already exceptional experience.

These benefits carry no additional cost. They are simply what comes with booking through me as an advisor who has negotiated on your behalf.

My personal advice before you book

Book Seta Su Ilma Before You Board
Dinner at Seta Su Ilma, the ship’s Italian fine dining experience, requires a reservation and comes at a supplement. It is one of the most talked about experiences on the ship, and it books out. I strongly recommend securing your reservation at the time of booking your cruise, rather than waiting until embarkation. The same applies to spa appointments and any specialised shore excursions you have your heart set on.

Consider Upgrading Your Suite Category
Many guests who book entry level Terrace Suites find, once aboard, that they wish they had stepped up to a higher category. The difference between a Terrace Suite and an Ilma Suite or Concierge Suite in terms of space and terrace size is meaningful on a longer voyage. I always discuss the full range of suite options with my clients before confirming, because the right suite genuinely enhances the experience.

Look at Combining Voyages
ILMA’s consecutive sailings are designed to be combined, and doing so gives you both a longer journey and often better overall value per night. If you are considering ILMA for a special occasion or milestone trip, it is worth looking at back to back options rather than defaulting to a single seven night sailing.

Think About Who This Experience is For
In my experience, ILMA is the perfect answer for clients who love luxury hotel experiences but have always dismissed cruising, those who want privacy and genuine service rather than the energy of a larger ship, couples celebrating milestones who want something truly memorable, and travellers who have “done” the Caribbean or Mediterranean by land and want a fresh perspective from the water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is everything included on ILMA?

The vast majority of the ILMA experience is included in your cruise fare: all main dining venues, beverages including premium spirits and wine, gratuities, and in suite minibar. The main exception is Seta Su Ilma, the specialty tasting menu restaurant, which carries a per person supplement. Spa treatments and certain premium wines are also additional.

Is ILMA suitable for first time cruisers?

Absolutely, and it is one of the most frequently cited reasons people choose RCYC. Around half of all guests on any ILMA sailing have never cruised before. The ship is deliberately designed to feel like a luxury hotel at sea, removing almost every element that puts people off mainstream cruising.

How long are ILMA sailings?

ILMA sailings range from five to eleven nights, and consecutive voyages can be combined for a longer journey. Most Caribbean itineraries are seven nights, while European itineraries offer a wider range of durations.

What is the dress code on ILMA?

ILMA maintains a relaxed, resort elegant dress standard. Smart casual is appropriate for most evenings, with no formal nights in the traditional cruise sense. It is an environment where guests feel polished but never overdressed or uncomfortable.

What does it cost to sail on ILMA?

ILMA pricing starts from approximately USD $7,300 per suite for a seven night Caribbean sailing, in double occupancy. Pricing varies by suite category, sailing date, and itinerary. I work with each client to find the option that represents the best value for their budget and travel style, including any available promotions or exclusive benefits.

What is the Signature $500 shipboard credit and how do I access it?

As a Signature Travel Network Advisor, I have negotiated exclusive benefits for my clients on select ILMA sailings, including a $500 USD shipboard credit per suite. This is available on specific departure dates and is applied at the time of booking through me. Simply reach out and I can confirm which sailings are eligible and guide you from there.

Ready to plan your sailing?

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection ILMA represents something genuinely rare in travel: a product that actually lives up to its positioning. In a world where “luxury” is often applied loosely, ILMA earns it. The space, the service philosophy, the culinary standard, the attention to every detail from the quality of the bath products to the name of your suite ambassador, it all adds up to an experience that guests describe as transformative rather than simply pleasant.

If you have been curious about ILMA, or if you think you “don’t do cruises,” this is the ship that will change your mind. I would love to talk through the options and find the right sailing for you.

I specialise in luxury cruising and boutique ocean experiences. Let me find the right itinerary, the best suite category, and make sure your sailing is something truly unforgettable
