Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, which is why we’ve compiled a list of the worlds best places to kick start your day. Windy’s Café, Skegness, England
The forgotten seaside town of Skegness has few tourist attractions remaining, however the quintessential British greasy spoon still manages to entice the masses.
Windy’s doesn’t have the biggest or most imaginative menu, nor does it offer scenic views, but what it does do, it does sublimely. Three types of English breakfast are on offer; little, large and builders. The builders breakfast consists of two sausages, two rashers of bacon, two eggs, fried tomatoes, baked beans, hash browns, black pudding, fried bread, toast and a strong mug of tea.
While we’re not recommending substituting your daily bowl of muesli for the builder’s breakfast, it would be a shame to visit England and not indulge in the T-Rex of English breakfasts. The builders breakfast is also reasonably priced, especially considering you wont need to eat for the entire day.
Lula’s Café, Chicago, USA
The discussion of where the best pancakes in America can be found is open to much debate, but Lula’s café continuously crops up.
Lula’s café has become synonymous with pancakes and griddlecakes, offering a refreshing array of sweet and savoury options that change with the seasons. From pancakes smothered in honey poached pears to whipped ricotta griddlecakes, there isn’t a weak option, and if you’re craving a specific topping or filling, the chefs are more than happy to oblige.
The restaurant also does a superb breakfast burrito for the member of your party without a sweet tooth, filled with scrambled eggs, avocado, tomato, onion and potato. Better still, breakfast is served until 2.30pm so you don’t have to be up with the lark to sample the pride of the windy city.
Café Central, Vienna, Austria
With a prestigious heritage dating back to 1876, Vienna’s Café Central has long been a favourite rendezvous for intellectuals and gastronomes. Trotsky, Herzl and Freud have all been regulars to this establishment and you don’t have to be a genius to figure out why.
Set in the majestically grand Palais Ferstel, portraits of the Austro-Hungarian royal family adorn the walls and tuxedo clad waiters serve gourmet food under an ecclesiastical arched ceiling.
The literary institution turn restaurant is famous for having the best pastry in Vienna. The Kaiserschmarrn, a traditional Austrian thick pancake, is a breakfast favourite served with plum compote and the cakes are so good they are regularly eaten with breakfast under the guise of brunch. The bistro also does a stunning continental breakfast with the finest cold meats, local cheeses, artisan breads and fresh fruit.
Chianti Classico, Adelaide, Australia
The Chianti Classico located in Adelaide’s CBD is the best place for breakfast in Oz, with a fantastically diverse menu and wide verandas allowing for al fresco fining throughout the year.
Set up by husband and wife duo Frank and Maria Favaro in 1985, Chianti Classico has won numerous accolades including the prestigious Ospitalita Italiano for authentic Italian dining, presented by the Italian government.
There are delectable savoury dishes such as specially imported Chanterelle mushrooms in black truffle butter and scrumptious sweet courses like blueberry waffles with orange curd. If you’re struggling to choose from the mouth-watering menu, there’s a special three-course breakfast that includes blueberry waffles, home made granola and eggs benedict.
