    Dear Italy... #LettersToOurWorld

    Dear Italy,

I remember the first time I really got to know you. I was sitting in my armchair with a cup of coffee, reading Romeo and Juliet, imagining medieval castles, floor to ceiling windows and balconies that bring the outdoors in. It was then I knew, that I simply had to meet you.

It was love at first sight. When I close my eyes, I can hear the sweet sound of my gondolier singing as he navigated the waterways of Venice. Don’t ask me what he was singing about. I have no idea, but it was beautiful all the same.

I remember how much we all laughed when the man at the gelateria told me I had ordered “wind flavour”. Sure, it was embarrassing, and I don’t actually remember what I was trying to order, but it was a small price to pay in an attempt to practice my Italian and fit in with the locals.

Walking through the streets of Rome, I wasn’t sure whether to follow my nose to a fresh pizza or make my way to the Trevi Fountain. Why not both? The fountain was filled with coins from across the globe, reminding me that you were mine to share. As I tossed in a couple of Euro, I wished for the most delicious slice of pizza (and that this wasn’t just a holiday fling). Both came true.

On subsequent encounters I learned about ancient civilisation, was brought to tears at first glimpse of the Amalfi Coast, and lived life on the edge as I tore dangerously through busy streets on a vespa, learning a few new choice Italian words in the process.

But I miss you. I miss all the things that piqued my senses on that very first visit. And I’m sad that we have to be so far apart right now.

All of these fond memories fuel the fire in my belly to come back. That day will come. I can’t wait to see you again.

    Until then, wait for me.

    Ciao Amore Mio.

“Parting is such sweet sorrow, that I shall say goodnight till it be morrow.”
    – William Shakespeare
