European River Cruising Top Tips

European River Cruising Top Tips

A European river cruise is a fantastic way to explore Europe, affording passengers the opportunity to soak up the landscape from a unique viewpoint whilst enjoying amazing local cuisine, unique shore excursions, and cabins that are spacious and comfortable, with every convenience you could hope to expect.  Here is personal travel manager Erin Beckford’s top tips for making the most of your home away from home.

  1. Complimentary room service is often available at no extra cost, so I recommend you make the most of it. Treat yourself to breakfast in bed (or on your balcony if you’re lucky enough to have one), or enjoy some peace and quiet along with a club sandwich or burger after a busy morning ashore.
  2. Take the time when you first embark to explore the vessel so you are familiar with the layout. You’ll find there is plenty of space on board where you can sit and have a quiet drink, read a book, use the complimentary Wi-Fi or just enjoy the mesmerising scenery.
  3. Many cruises offer a complimentary mini-bar so you can sit on your verandah for sundowner drinks. Add some local cheeses and other delicacies that you’ve purchased from the markets – heaven!  While you’re in shopping mode, a bunch of flowers bought from a local vendor will make your cabin really feel like it is your own.
  4. Indulge in a little pampering and rejuvenation by booking in for an on-board spa treatment: many ships have their own spa and hair salon on board.
  5. Using the provided bicycles is a great way to explore ports of call whilst getting a little exercise to counteract the delicious meals, but be sure to get in early as they tend to be very popular.
  6. Get lost (just a little). Shore excursions are great, but I recommend you also allow yourself some time to explore the city/town/village on your own. Talk to the locals, try their local food and drink, and just immerse yourself. But be sure to take a Scenic River Ship card from reception on board, just in case you need to take a taxi or you need assistance getting back to the ship.
  7. Enjoy yourself. With so much spectacular scenery gliding past your window, it can be easy to get swept up in trying to capture it all.  But be sure to pause and put down your camera/phone every now and then, and just take a moment soak it all in.
