New Zealand Hiking - Coromandel Calling **FULL**
    9 days / 8 nights
From AUD $3,990* Per person, twin share
Join Auckland Saturday 8 October 2022
This week combines two of the best ways to immerse yourself in New Zealand; food and hiking. During the day you'll lace up your hiking boots and be out in New Zealand's great outdoors exploring the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula – accompanied by a local guide. At the end of the day, return to the Lodge where great New Zealand food and wine awaits. The Lodges have been chosen for their location as much as their comfort, imagine relaxing in a spa under the stars listening to the (feathered) Kiwi’s foraging in the nearby bush!

Tour operates subject to a minimum of 4 passengers, maximum of 8. All costs are for share twin/double accommodation. If you prefer a single room the additional supplement is AUD840.

    Day 4

    Tuesday

Today we make our way up the eastern side of the peninsula soaking up the incredible coastal scenery. Our first short walk of the day is the Whenuakite Kauri loop. This track winds its way through one of the biggest uninterrupted blocks of coastal native bush in New Zealand, where an active Kiwi Recovery Programme is operating. Lunch today (with a view!) is at boutique, family owned vineyard and winery Mercury Bay Estate. Continuing our winding journey north, we arrive at the sleepy seaside town of Whangapoua, ready for our second short walk to New Chum beach – voted one of the world’s top 10 beaches. Arriving at our secluded lodge with plenty of daylight to spare, the time is yours to spend how you please. Relax in one of the spas, take a walk around the beautiful grounds, explore their private bush trail or perhaps indulge in a massage before dinner.

    Day 5

    Wednesday

Boots on as we take on the coastal walkway today, at the most northern and remote tip of the peninsula. The track, an old bridle path formed by early pioneers boasts some of the most spectacular coastal scenery of the trip. We wind our way through Kanuka forest and pristine sub-tropical bush discovering twinkling bays along the way. Passing beneath the shadow of Mt Moehau, the track follows an easy gradient with a short steep section into and out of Poley Bay. From here, you will head on to farmland with views of Great Barrier Island. Kiwi-style tapas are waiting for us at the lodge for dinner tonight. We watch the sun go down and welcome the moon with the call of the kiwi bird outside our cabins if we’re lucky.
Hiking distance 15kms/6-7 hours (medium grade)

    Wednesday

    Day 6

    Thursday

Early birds catch the worm this morning as we make our way back down the western side of the peninsula with one of the most stunning coastal drives in New Zealand. A quick stop for coffee and a peruse of some homemade chutneys, cured meat and pickles before we arrive at Coromandel Town – time for a short look around the shops (the only chance to do so on this tour!). Today’s hike is a gentle walk to see one of the finest remaining Kauri groves in a lush and diverse ecological area. Regenerating forest hosts new life, covered in moss beneath the canopy. Our bed and breakfast for the night is nestled in the stunning Kauaeranga Valley and hosts an enticing hot tub, where a glass of wine or two could be enjoyed before dinner. Tonight we head down to the Thames wharf to feast on fresh fish and chips – the takeaway meal beloved by generations of Kiwis.

    Thursday

    Day 7

    Friday

We head inland today for spectacular craggy terrain on the popular but challenging Pinnacles hike. Traversing through groves of nikau palms, huge rata trees, and across streams and swing bridges, we make our way up to the Hut. The last section of the track leading to the jagged summit of the Pinnacles is steep and requires some scrambling, but for those up for the challenge the reward is magnificent panoramic views across the Coromandel region. After lunch at the Hut, we head back down the track and it’s a short drive back to our lodge to put our feet up and enjoy a meal cooked by our lovely host on our final night.
Hiking distance 14kms /7-8 hours (hard grade)

    Day 8

After a sleep in and delicious cooked breakfast enjoyed in the tranquil surroundings of the valley, it’s time to pack up and head north back up to Auckland. We do have a short warm down walk in the Hunua Ranges today, where we can view the Hunua Falls and visit a pretty swimming hole. Before we drop you off, we enjoy our last lunch together at John Hill Estate and some wine tasting. A fine way to finish a fulfilling week of exploring, exchanging final stories with the new group of friends made on the tour.

The guide will ensure that the pace is dictated by the group and allow plenty of time for short breaks for water, refreshments, photos and interesting stories on the way. It’s about the journey, not the destination.

    • 3 – 8 hours of hiking per day.
    • Altitude gains of up to 600m (2000ft) on the last day.

    The Hikes

The hikes have been chosen for their beauty, diversity of terrain and landscapes, flora, special features and conservation values. The programme of day walks on this tour is designed to have a mix of easier, medium and harder graded walks, with no two hard walks back to back, giving your legs a chance to recover in order to make the most of this hiking tour. Some of the tracks are well-known and are too scenic to leave off the tours, others are so secret that not even the locals know about them!

    The Food

There’s a variety of kiwi cuisine experiences, from fine-dining to hearty home cooking by our local hosts – some even source fresh produce from their own gardens! Breakfast is an option of cooked or continental to fuel you properly for your day of hiking. Lunches are freshly packed for you in the mornings and we have plenty of snacks for the journey. Evening meals are two or three-courses with a glass of wine, beer or beverage of your choice.
