Arrive at Christchurch and collect your car hire at the airport. Make your way into the city and check into Chateau on the Park. From here you can wander through Hagley Park and explore the Riverside Markets, Botanic Gardens, the Canterbury Museum, and the Avon River.
Enjoy a relaxed morning before travelling inland to the ski town of Methven. This afternoon enjoy a soak in the newly opened Opuke Hot pools just across the road from you hotel. Step into the adults only pools and let the stress soak away. Truly feel on holiday as you explore the network of interconnecting pools including the star lit caves and cold relief tub. Today you hit the slopes with your NZSki Superpass. Mt Hutt has been voted New Zealand’s best ski resort seven years running at the World Ski Awards. You’ll see spectacular views over the Canterbury Plains out to the Pacific Ocean while enjoying one of the locals favourite playgrounds.
Depart Methven for the high-country lakeside village of Lake Tekapo. This picturesque town resides on the edge of this crystal-clear lake with a stunning mountain backdrop this simply breathtaking. The Church of the Good Shepherd is an iconic photo stop whether covered in snow or spring lupins. This afternoon visit the Dark Sky Project on the lakefront and have an experience that is out of this world.
This morning it’s a short drive from Lake Tekapo into Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. This alpine village sits at the base of the highest peak in New Zealand, Aoraki/ Mt Cook. Become immersed by the glacier lakes & valleys, snow-capped peaks of Mt Cook and Mt Sefton and scenery of this region. Scenic flights are a great way to take in the full scope of Aoraki/Mount Cook and the Southern Alps. By night Mt Cook offers unrivalled star gazing with no small towns close by the night sky is crystal clear.
Travelling further down through the Lindis Pass into the Southern Lakes region you’ll reach your next destination of Queenstown. This ski resort town caters to everyone’s needs with adventure activities, skiing & boarding and apres’ ski all topped off with great local food & wine.
After your warmup at Mt Hutt it’s another day on the slopes. You have the choice of either Coronet Peak or The Remarkables. Both mountains cater well to beginner and intermediate skiers and boarders and have easy access from Queenstown.
Departing Queenstown, you’ll venture through the goldrush and wine country of Central Otago out to the Pacific Coast and to the town of Oamaru. A unique stop on your journey east is the Moeraki Boulders. These mysterious spherical stones are scattered across the beach and offer up some imaginative photo opportunities. Tonight, you’ll meet some of the locals with a evening viewing of the little blue penguins coming back in from the ocean to nest for the night.
Returning to Christchurch today gives you the opportunity to venture up the coastline before arriving back at the garden city. You can spend the afternoon further explore the rebuild of Christchurch and the new city that is emerging.
After you check out of your accommodation says farewell to Christchurch and the South Island, return your rental car and depart for your onward journey.
