Welcome to the vibrant capital of Spain, Madrid. After reaching your hotel, the day is yours to rest and relax, or to explore and get acquainted with Madrid. Potentially, you may wish to visit the world renowned Prado Museum, or simply walk the delightful boulevards to take in the atmosphere. At 7:00 pm, enjoy a welcome soft drink for an orientation discussion with your tour escort and meet your traveling companions.
After breakfast, depart for your tour of Madrid. Your morning tour will take you through the main avenues of the city, the highlights of which include the magnificent fountains of Neptune and Cibeles, the Alcala Gate and the Plaza de España, so that you panoramically view the most representative buildings and streets. You will also visit inside the spectacular Royal Palace, no longer the Royal residence although it remains in use for official government ceremonies.
This afternoon, you will take a trip south to visit Toledo, a previous capital of Spain during several centuries. Known as the City of Three Cultures, between the XIII and XIV centuries, Muslim, Jewish and Christian populations lived peacefully together creating a great cultural center. Enjoy a walk along its narrow streets where history can be felt in the air. You will externally visit the Cathedral and go into the St Tome Church to see El Greco´s masterpiece – The Burial of the Count of Orgaz. Return to Madrid for your overnight stay.
After breakfast, depart to Granada, with a short stop en route in Aranjuez, to see the magnificent gardens, full of centenary trees, of this old Spanish King´s summer residence. Continue south to discover the extensive, flat, region of “La Mancha”, the land where Don Quixote lived his crazy adventures, which is also Spain’s largest wine producing area. Visit a traditional wine producer where they will show us their way of elaborating product and some curious secrets of theirs, such as the influence of the moon and the stars in the biological process of the vineyards. You will finish your visit by tasting three different wines along with some breads and ham and local cheese (very acclaimed within in Spain) tapas, the best accompaniments to these wines. Afterwards, continue to Granada.
After breakfast, embark on your morning guided city tour to visit the stunning architectural delight of La Alhambra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is also the best and most striking example in the world of the sophisticated Royal life in the Nazari Islamic kingdom from the XI to XV centuries. You will find numerous halls and “patios” (courtyards) of amazing beauty. You will also visit the world famous and beautiful Generalife gardens with its wonderful fountains. In the afternoon, continue to Seville.
After breakfast, you will have a morning guided tour to visit inside the Gothic Cathedral, the largest Cathedral in Spain and third largest in the world and see the tomb of Christopher Columbus. You will be able to walk up the Giralda tower (the striking minaret of the former mosque) to have a superb view over the city. You will then take a walk in the Santa Cruz Quarter, a maze of small alleys and squares.
In the afternoon, enjoy an introductory and practical Flamenco lesson dancing with a professional dancer.
After breakfast, *you will visit an Andalusian horse farm (Yeguada) to see a normal days training and learn about the breeding and taming of these amazing horses. Afterwards, travel north to Cordoba. It was under Muslim rule that Cordoba reached its maximum splendor, especially in the IX and X centuries, when it became the capital of the Caliphate, and was then most populated town in the world (with almost 1 million). Your morning guided city tour will include a visit to the Mosque, rightly considered one the most beautiful in the world and a walk around the Jewish Quarter, with its narrow streets and Andalusian “patios’’. In the afternoon, head back to Madrid, where a Farewell dinner will be served, a great way to enjoy the final moments with your new friends met during the tour.
After breakfast, depart for Barcelona. After arrival to your centrally located hotel, the remainder of the day will be at your leisure. A hostess will hold an introductory meeting with all those coming on this optional extension, to assist in planning the stay in Barcelona and to answer any questions and so forth. Should it be desirable, advance tickets can be purchased for customers who may wish to plan an advance visit to sites such as Parc Guell, or La Sagrada Familia.
At 9:00 am, your English speaking local guide will be waiting for you to take you on your guided tour through the historical oldest downtown area, the Gothic quarter. The tour will take in the maze of little streets where we will find splendid palaces and some of the main institutional buildings such as the Generalitat (regional government HQ). We will also visit the Cathedral and the Basilica St. Maria del Mar, a splendid example of Gothic Architecture.
The day is yours to explore the fascinating city of Barcelona. The works of Gaudi may await today, or a visit to the famous Boqueria Market, whilst other possible excursions of interest could include a visit, and cable car ride, to Montjuic or a trip to Montserrat.
