Arctic Norway - Under the Northern Lights with HX Expeditions

What Exactly is an Expedition Cruise?

You could easily Google it or ask an AI, but has an algorithm ever actually stood on a frozen deck at midnight? The answer is no. To truly understand it, you have to experience it—so let’s go for a ride through Arctic Norway under the Northern Lights with HX Expeditions aboard the MS Spitsbergen.

The Magic of the Midnight Sky

Imagine sitting out in the biting cold, staring at a still, dark sky and thinking, “Well, maybe tonight isn’t the night.” Then—boom. The sky starts dancing. Green wisps cut through the clouds, swirling into a spectacular light show. Even on an evening with low solar activity, it is a visceral, jaw-dropping experience.

Days of Discovery

“That’s great,” you might say, “but what happens when the sun is up?”

  • Shore Excursions: We hopped into Zodiacs and headed for a small island once fortified with German bunkers.
  • The View from the Top: After a hike to the summit, we were met by the expedition crew who had a fire roaring. We stood overlooking the fjords and snow-capped peaks in total silence.
  • The “Right to Roam”: Our guide, Morton—a 7-foot local giant—explained the Norwegian philosophy of Friluftsliv. In Norway, you are free to wander anywhere in the wilderness to reset and escape the daily grind. We took two minutes just to breathe that crisp, Arctic air. It was transformative.

Edible Time Travel

For a truly unique experience, you can enjoy “edible time travel” aboard the dry-docked MS Finnmarken (1956), which is preserved inside a spectacular glass gallery at the Hurtigruten Museum. You’ll dine in the meticulously restored mid-century dining hall, enjoying a catered meal and drinks—complete with pre-dinner canapés—as you explore the ship. Beyond the 1950s charm, the museum also features the ornate, wood-carved 1st-class salons of the 1912 DS Finnmarken, offering a regal glimpse into the golden age of exploration. It is a rare opportunity to savor a meal in a historic maritime setting while looking out through massive glass walls at the stunning Vesterålen scenery.

Life Onboard: Science, Trolls, and Hot Tubs

Back on the ship, the vibe is educational yet relaxed. The Science Team hosts lectures on everything from marine biology and Norwegian history to the “serious” cultural significance of Trolls.

The best part? To catch the Northern Lights, you have to ditch a normal sleep schedule. You can leave your cabin phone notifications on to wake you when the sky “wakes up,” or you can do it the right way: grab a drink, throw on a dressing gown, and hit the deck-top hot tubs. Watching the aurora dance above you while soaking in steaming water is a core memory in the making.

The “Anti-Cruise” Experience

With a maximum of 150 guests, this isn’t a floating city; it’s an intimate community. You actually get to know your fellow explorers over drinks or a warm, fresh-out-of-the-oven cookie.

  • Sustainable Comfort: The cabins are clean, practical, and clever. The showers are hot and endless, using treated seawater pulled directly from the fjords.
  • Purposeful Travel: You can opt-out of daily housekeeping to “go green.” For every day you skip a cleaning, HX donates to the HX Foundation to support environmental efforts.

From snow hikes and kayaking to deep-dive education, this was more than a holiday—it was the perfect introduction to the wild, immersive world of expedition cruising.

If this sounds like the kind of adventure you’ve been waiting for, get in touch! I can help get you headed toward Tromsø, Norway—which feels like the very top of the world compared to where we are down here. Come immerse yourself in Norwegian culture and, of course, enjoy a famously overpriced (but perfectly brewed) local beer.
