Cruising Norway in Comfort: A Journey Aboard Hurtigruten’s MS Trollfjord

Norway’s rugged coastline has long held a magnetic pull for travellers drawn to dramatic fjords, snowy peaks, and raw, untamed beauty. If you’ve been dreaming of an immersive way to experience it all, without sacrificing comfort or culinary delight, Hurtigruten’s Signature Voyage aboard the MS Trollfjord delivers in spades.

Recently, I sailed the North Cape Line (Southbound), a 6-night coastal voyage beginning in Tromsø and ending in Bergen. It was one of the most unique and unforgettable ways I’ve seen a country—intimate, scenic, and deeply authentic.

A Different Kind of Cruise

Unlike traditional cruises that are all about sea days and mega-ship entertainment, Hurtigruten offers something entirely different. Their roots lie in Norway’s working coastal service, connecting remote communities and delivering goods year-round. While their original voyages still run on that schedule, Signature Voyages are a step up, carefully curated for the leisure traveller.

Instead of 30+ quick stops, the Signature experience selects key ports and gives travellers ample time ashore, with many half-day or full-day stops that let you properly explore, join excursions, and absorb the atmosphere of each destination.

A Closer Look at Life Along the Coast

Two excursions stood out during our trip, each offering something truly unique:

❄️ North Cape by ATV – Honningsvåg

After being outfitted in warm gear, we revved up for a 60km round trip ATV ride to the North Cape. The snow-covered route and wide-open landscapes made for a thrilling adventure, capped off by panoramic views at one of Europe’s northernmost points.

🌊 The Atlantic Road – Kristiansund Area

One of the most iconic stretches of road in Norway, the Atlantic Road winds over a series of islands connected by eight bridges. As you travel along this 8km engineering marvel, you’re treated to stunning sea views and dramatic coastal scenery. It’s not just a drive—it’s a destination.

📍 Excursion Tip: The most popular activities (like North Cape and king crab safaris) book out quickly, so pre-book where possible. That said, smaller ports can often be explored independently. There are also hiking tours that aren’t widely advertised online, so check in with the expedition team onboard if you’re keen for more active options.

The Ship: Scandinavian Style Meets Warm Hospitality

The MS Trollfjord is beautifully designed—sleek, cosy, and filled with thoughtful details that reflect Norwegian style and culture.

🍽️ Dining Highlights

There are three dining venues, each offering a different vibe:

  • Flora: Buffet breakfast and lunch, followed by a set-menu, three-course dinner. Dinner menus change daily and offer a variety of choices.
  • Brasserie Arran: Open from midday to 9pm with a fixed à la carte menu. A great alternative if you prefer flexibility or want to switch things up.
  • Røst Fine Dining: A highlight for foodies. This venue is included for suite guests, but all passengers can book in for a supplement. I highly recommend trying the seven-course tasting menu with wine pairings—it’s a standout experience.

🥂 Drinks are included throughout the day—not just at mealtimes. That means you can enjoy wine, beer, cider, and selected spirits from the bar whenever the mood strikes.

Cabins for Every Style of Traveller

Whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple, or with a friend, the ship has a range of cabin options to suit.

  • Standard cabins are compact but cleverly laid out, with heated floors in the bathrooms and ample storage.
  • Suites offer more space and include some great perks, like a cocktail package, a premium minibar, and a clothing credit for a waterproof jacket and pants set you get to keep. Cabins vary depending on location, so it’s worth reviewing the layout when choosing.

Little Extras That Go a Long Way

  • If you’re chasing the Northern Lights, you can opt in to cabin alerts, so you’ll be gently woken if there’s a sighting—no need to stand out in the cold for hours.
  • The expedition team onboard gives enriching talks and daily port briefings, so you always know what’s coming next.
  • The environment is social but never overwhelming. Whether you’re looking to connect with others or enjoy quiet moments, the ship provides plenty of cosy corners and shared experiences that suit every kind of traveller.
  • There’s also a complimentary self-serve laundry area onboard—handy for longer trips or light packers.

The Verdict: An Exceptional Way to See Norway

This voyage struck a beautiful balance between adventure and ease, luxury and authenticity. The pace felt intentional—no rushing, no crowding—just time to enjoy the unfolding landscapes, hearty food, and meaningful conversations.

Whether you’re a solo adventurer, a couple looking for a unique getaway, or friends exploring together, this is a journey that leaves a mark.
