I’ve travelled through Vietnam and Cambodia several times, but never by cruise – and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved it. Life aboard felt like a home away from home, with friendly staff who couldn’t do enough to make us comfortable.
Travel Tips:
Visa: Vietnam’s visa process is a bit of a pain – even when transiting through Saigon. Do your visa online before arrival.
Baggage: Vietnam Airlines enforces a strict 20kg limit, so pack light!
Pre-cruise stay: The Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort in Siem Reap is stunning and often used by cruise operators. It’s about 2km from Pub Street and perfect for exploring by tuk tuk (USD 25/day).
Cruise Experience:
We travelled five hours from Siem Reap to Kampong Cham to board the APT Mekong Serenity for a 7-night journey down the river. Meals were excellent, with both à la carte and buffet options.
Highlights included Phnom Penh’s rooftop La Vida Skybar (spectacular sunset views), a Buddhist blessing in Oudong, village tours in Sa Dec and Cai Be, and endless life unfolding along the riverbanks – from floating cows to bustling markets.
The food was delicious throughout: Cambodian specialties upstream, Vietnamese cuisine after crossing the border. The staff were exceptional – warm, attentive, and always smiling.
Post-cruise in Saigon:
After disembarking at My Tho, we headed to Ho Chi Minh City (about two hours). I stayed at the Majestic Hotel — great river views, a rooftop bar, and within walking distance of everything. Spa treatments are excellent value (USD 25/hour), though wine is pricey — stick to beer and cocktails!
Final Thoughts:
This Mekong River cruise was an unforgettable journey through culture, history, and everyday life on the water. I can’t wait to plan the next one — perhaps the Amazon next time!
