Texas – via Fiji: So Much More

Texas – via Fiji: So Much More

To celebrate the launch of Fiji Airways flights into Dallas, I was lucky enough to win a competition with Texas Tourism and Fiji Airways – and experience it all firsthand.

Flying from Brisbane, I had a comfortable 4–5 hour stopover. If you’re planning an American adventure followed by some relaxation in Fiji (or the other way around), I’d absolutely recommend Fiji Airways. The staff are warm and relaxed, the food was nice, and thanks to the time difference, flights arrive in the U.S. at very manageable times -definitely something to consider.

Arrival in Texas

We landed at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport right on time at 5pm. My top tip for adjusting to a new time zone: eat according to the local clock. So, we grabbed dinner and stocked up on snacks before tackling the 100-mile (2+ hour) drive to our accommodation.

In hindsight, arriving close to midnight wasn’t ideal – I’m sure we missed some stunning countryside along the way.

Ranch Life at Wildcatter

Our home base was Wildcatter Ranch – a beautiful property that fully immerses you in cowboy country. You never forget you’re in Texas here.

One of the highlights? Feeding the iconic Longhorn cattle. Each morning after 9am, guests can head out with a bag of treats provided by the hotel and meet the five friendly Longhorns up close.

After breakfast, we explored the property with a hike and even went horseback riding. There’s no shortage of activities – archery, clay shooting, roping, leather branding, fishing, plus a pool, hot tub, and spa. I’d recommend staying at least three days to really experience it all.

Mineral Wells & “Crazy Water”

Next, we visited Mineral Wells, a vibrant town of around 16,000 people. We toured the historic Crazy Water Hotel and stopped by The Water Pavilion for a water tasting – and who knew water could have such distinct textures? It’s all about the minerals. The famous “Crazy Water” has drawn visitors for years, believed to have restorative benefits. And apparently… it might even help with your “craziness”- so the saying goes!

Whiskey & BBQ

We then headed to TX Whiskey Ranch for a cocktail and a tour of the stunning grounds. It’s safe to say no one left without a souvenir bottle.

Dinner was at Panther City BBQ amazing barbecue – think brisket, ribs, lamb, and all the trimmings, paired with live local music.

Right next door was The Nobleman Fort Worth, a trendy boutique hotel set in a former fire station built in 1911.

Fort Worth – The Unexpected City

Fort Worth is known as “The Unexpected City,” and I couldn’t agree more – I loved every minute.

Shopping for cowboy boots alone could take hours (so many choices!), but one absolute must-see is the world’s only twice-daily cattle drive in the Fort Worth Stockyards. Twice a day, at 11:30am and 4:00pm, Longhorns are driven through the streets by drovers on horseback. It’s the perfect moment to grab a coffee and soak up the atmosphere.

If your budget allows, stay at Hotel Drover. It’s beautifully designed, full of dining and entertainment options, and perfectly located. I’d recommend at least three nights here to enjoy everything – from live music to museums.

The Fort Worth Cultural District is home to world-class institutions like the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. And don’t miss the John Wayne Museum.

Dallas Highlights

Next stop: Dallas – just a short 30-minute trip away. The easiest way to get there is via the airport link train into the city centre.

We spent three days exploring. I would recommend The Adolphus Hotel and heading into Deep Ellum, one of the city’s most historic and creative districts. A guided walking tour took us through Blues Alley and highlighted its rich musical heritage.

We also visited Pecan Lodge, one of Texas’ most famous barbecue spots. Seeing the smoking process up close made my eyes water!

A fun and unexpected highlight was the Sweet Tooth Hotel -not actually a hotel, but an immersive art experience filled with colour, storytelling, and interactive exhibits. Perfect for a fun girls night out.

Museums, History and More

Dallas is a haven for museum lovers. A visit to the The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza offers a powerful look into the assassination of John F. Kennedy, with the exact location marked on the road below with an X.

We also toured the George W. Bush Presidential Center, which provides fascinating insight into the life and presidency of the 43rd U.S. President.

Another standout experience was visiting AT&T Stadium – home of the Dallas Cowboys -where we even got access to the locker rooms of the famous Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.

There’s truly so much to see and do in Dallas, from art and science museums to sculpture parks – definitely worth the visit.

Next Time…

If I’d had more time, I would’ve continued the road trip through Texas – heading to Houston, Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Fredericksburg, and Austin before looping back to Fort Worth.

That will have to wait for next time.

A huge thank you to Travel Texas and Fiji Airways for hosting such an incredible experience and showcasing the very best of Texas.
