The festive spirit comes alive in winter. Twinkling lights and the aroma of mulled wine transport you to another world. Growing up in Germany and now living in Australia, I have always loved Christmas markets. With every return to these markets, I explore them through the eyes of the Australian traveller. I aim to share their unique charm with current and future clients. Follow along as I uncover the magic of Christmas markets in Germany and Austria. Together, we’ll experience moments of joy, tradition, and connection that inspire your next holiday adventure.
As I travel from market to market, I always choose charming boutique hotels that perfectly capture the local and the season’s character. These accommodations, located near the action in city centres, feel like home. Warm welcomes envelop me like a cosy blanket. Each hotel I select has its own history. They are lovingly refurbished or handed down through generations. The festive decorations spill into every corner, creating an inviting atmosphere that echoes the spirit of the markets outside.
With each market visit, I am always greeted by a familiar sense of warmth. Wooden stalls adorned with wreaths and twinkling lights invite me to explore local crafts and seasonal treats. One venue that stands out is at a mulled wine stall. Here, I love to indulge in the traditional “Feuerzangenbowle”. This delightful concoction of spiced wine and rum topped with a flaming sugar cone becomes more than just a drink. It transforms into a celebration of the season. The air fills with the tantalizing aromas of cinnamon and cloves. It’s impossible not to get swept away by this festive ambiance.
In Munich, I cannot go past the Weisswurst, a specialty sausage enjoyed for breakfast but equally delightful during the festive season. Served with sweet mustard and freshly baked pretzels, this dish showcases Bavarian culinary traditions. The experience feels complete as I sit in a cosy beer hall. Laughter and the clinking of glasses surround me, creating this infectious joy embraced by locals during the holiday spirit.
Each Christmas market I visit, from the historic stalls in Nuremberg to the bustling centre of Munich and the picturesque settings in Salzburg and Innsbruck, offers its unique charm. Nuremberg’s Christkindl, one of the oldest markets, showcases a vibrant mix of tradition. As I savour sizzling Nürnberger Bratwursts grilling over open flames, the market’s essence envelops me. These small sausages, perfectly seasoned and served hot in a warm bun with tangy mustard, make for a delightful treat that warms my spirit amidst the winter chill.
The enchanting aroma of freshly baked Lebkuchen fills the air. These spiced gingerbread cookies tempt me yet again. Each bite transports me to the heart of nostalgia, rich with honey and spices. Often adorned with delicate icing, they resemble tiny works of art. I can’t resist picking up a few to share with family back home, as for me they are an essential part of a traditional German Christmas.
In Salzburg, I always search for the best Vanillekipferl, these delectable crescent-shaped cookies dusted with powdered sugar. With a Vanillekipferl in one hand and a steaming cup of mulled wine in the other, it is the perfect combination to taste the season. The cookie’s delicate crunch gives way to a melt-in-your-mouth softness, while the subtle vanilla flavour lingers on my palate. In this moment, the spirit of Christmas genuinely envelops me as I enjoy these treats while gazing at the snow-dusted rooftops and twinkling lights around me.
In Innsbruck, my mission is to find the best “Zelten”, a festive bread packed with dried fruits and nuts. Another family favourite that reminds me of celebrations back home. As I take my first bite, the rich fruity flavours dance on my tongue. I can almost hear the sounds of holiday gatherings echoing in my mind. This experience perfectly illustrates the warmth of community and the joy of sharing good food during the holidays.
Each market, with its unique offerings, provides not just food but an immersive experience, a connection to the culture and a celebration of the season. The communal atmosphere, enhanced by these delightful dishes, transforms my visits into heartfelt memories. These memories remind me of the beauty of tradition and the joy of sharing these moments with others.
The Perfect Traveler’s Guide
Visiting these Christmas markets is a unique experience I wholeheartedly recommend. They cater to everyone, from budget travellers seeking authentic experiences to luxury travellers wanting a taste of traditional charm. However, one crucial tip for Australians planning to visit: prepare for the cold! It’s a different kind of holiday atmosphere, and embracing the chilly weather is all part of the magic. Best advice: Layers, Layers Layers!!
For each town you explore, I suggest spending a minimum of two nights. This duration allows you to immerse yourself in the market experience while visiting the incredible historical attractions nearby. Each city has its treasures, making winter visits just as rewarding as summer trips.
A journey through Germany and Austria’s Christmas markets is more than just a trip; it is a celebration of culture, warmth, and the spirit of community. Even though it is a while until the next Christmas season, I invite you to consider joining the adventure where every market visit tells a new story, and every taste brings a memory that lasts long after the lights have dimmed.
