South Korea Through a First-Time Visitor’s Eyes

South Korea Through a First-Time Visitor’s Eyes

Every trip has its “spark” — that moment where curiosity turns into a booked adventure. I recently spoke with one of my clients after their return from South Korea, and their reflections were equal parts heartfelt, unexpected, and wonderfully human.

Here’s their story.

What inspired your trip to South Korea?

A:
To be honest, it started with a movie and the TV show M*A*S*H. But what really brought it into focus was chatting with you as my personal travel manager, and even my GP who had visited the year before.

It also coincided with the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong, which added a deeper historical meaning to the timing of the trip.

What was your biggest “pinch me” moment?

A:
There were a few.

Meeting a veteran from the Battle of Battle of Kapyong in the lift at the Ambassador Hotel the evening before ANZAC Day was incredibly moving. That really stayed with me.

Visiting the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) was another major highlight — it’s one thing to read about it, but standing there is something else entirely.

Then there were the unexpected everyday moments — school kids asking where I was from, and when I said “Australia” and “kangaroo,” I got completely “celebrity mobbed” in the street. It was chaotic in the best way.

And finally… baseball. Go LG Twins!

What surprised you most about Korea?

A:
How safe it felt — whether walking around or taking taxis, day or night. That really stood out.

And how close everything is. You’re in the middle of Seoul, and suddenly you realise just how near the North Korean border actually is. That proximity makes history feel very present.

I also learned so much more about North Korea than I expected — it really added depth to the experience.

 Your favourite foodie moment?

A:
Korean fried chicken definitely deserves a mention — it’s as good as everyone says.

But the standout for me was spicy chicken soup. And surprisingly, the real highlight was something much simpler… the 10 Won pancake. Small, unexpected, and absolutely delicious.

Final thoughts…

What comes through most in this journey is how South Korea isn’t just a destination — it’s a blend of history, modern energy, warmth, and surprise moments you don’t see coming.  This is a destination that stays with you long after you return home.
