Pastitso Recipe: Traditional Greek Pasta Dish

Pastitsio is Greece’s ultimate comfort food – a rich, oven-baked pasta dish layered with hearty spiced meat sauce and topped with a silky, golden béchamel. Often described as the Greek answer to lasagne, it’s deeply satisfying, aromatic with cinnamon and herbs, and perfect for sharing around a family table. Every bite delivers warmth, nostalgia, and a true taste of traditional Greek home cooking.
Ingredients
- 250g macaroni pasta
- 2 eggs, lightly beaten
- 3/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
- 2 tablespoons breadcrumbs
Meat Sauce
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 medium onions, chopped
- 750g minced beef
- 425g can tomatoes
- 1/3 cup tomato paste
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup dry white wine
- 1 teaspoon beef stock powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
Topping
- 90g butter
- 1/2 cup plain flour
- 3 and a 1/2 cups milk
- 1 cup grated parmesan cheese
- 2 egg yolks
Method
- Grease shallow ovenproof dish. Add pasta to boiling water until tender and then drain. Combine pasta, eggs and cheese in bowl and mix well. Press over base of dish.
- Top pasta evenly with meat and sprinkle breadcrumbs and top with sauce and bake for 1 hour.
- To make the topping, melt butter in pan, add flour and stir over heat and then gradually stir in milk, cool down and add cheese and egg yolks.
