Best resorts for travelling with kids in the US and Canada

    Share Share Comments comments

Both the United States and neighbouring Canada are great family-friendly destinations – unwind at one of these relaxing resorts, all set amongst picturesque surroundings.

The Breakers, Palm Beach – Florida

Few resorts are as stunning as The Breakers, with its Italian Renaissance-style architecture and magnificent landscaping. Yet the chic design hasn’t stopped the staff from scheduling family friendly parent-and-child activities such as Friday night bonfires at the beach and weekend family kickball contests on the lawn. The hotel offers a kids’ camp, mixing indoor arts and crafts and outdoor fun like sandcastle building and scavenger hunts. Though parents are permitted (but not obligated) to stay, the camp assigns one counselor to every five kids, making it a fun holiday for the kids, and relaxing break for the parents. All 560 rooms are non smoking and newly renovated, awaiting the arrival of your family.

Loews Coronado Bay Resort and Spa, San Diego – California

“In travelling with my family, I’ve been struck by how many resorts aim to keep kids quiet and out of sight,” says Kathleen Cochran, general manager. “Here, we want kids to be seen and heard.”

Loews was ranked the best hotel chain for families in 2003, and its Coronado Bay Resort & Spa offers all the brand’s kid-friendly features and more in a relaxed beach setting. For children ages 4 to 12, the resort offers kickboxing and yoga classes at the on-site spa and a camp, with one counselor for every four kids, during the summer and on school holidays. Campers decorate and fly kites, swim, and learn origami. Family activities include a baking class with the resort’s pastry chef, poolside workshops on creating healthy kids’ drinks, and family bingo. All rooms are family friendly and non smoking, ready to accommodate your family for a fun filled holiday.

Four Seasons Lana’I, Manele Bay – Hawaii

Overlooking a waterfall, the facility that houses the Four Seasons children’s camp is stunning, with jungle murals, butterfly lights, and an outdoor play area. This new resort, formerly the Manele Bay Hotel, boasts 215 guest rooms, all non-smoking. They’re built on 30 acres of tropical gardens in Lana’i, 45 minutes from Maui via ferry. Year-round, complimentary kids’ camp is available all day which includes a pool with dive-in movies, complimentary Evian spritzers and chilled towels, playground, toddler beds, bikes and stroller rentals, kids’ menus at all restaurants and free meals for children ages 4 and under. There is endless opportunities for your children to be kept busy, leaving plenty of time for you to unwind and enjoy your holiday.

Hotel De Glace, Quebec – Canada

Hotel De Glace is a very family friendly hotel, allowing parents some time to relax while their kids entertain themselves. Families can opt for larger suites with fireplaces, and if they are still cold, there are hot tubs and saunas in the hotel. Cafe Glace is a place for guests to dine with their children in the castle. Hotel de Glace offers a range of nearby activities. Families can visit Station Touristique Duchesnay to rent any number of snow sport equipment or dine in an upscale restaurant. If that isn’t adventurous enough, you can go on a dogsled ride or learn to snowmobile. Dad can try his hand at ice fishing, while Mom visits the nordic spa-or vice versa! Quebec City is nearby and the hotel has a shuttle for its guests. If your kids like making igloos or snow forts, this is the perfect place to stay.

Great Wolf Lodge, Ripleys Water Park Resort – Niagara Falls

The Great Wolf Lodge is in a great location, only 3km from Niagara Falls. It is the perfect resort for the kids as it has its own water park with 13 waterslides, the perfect place for children and teens to enjoy themselves while parents can sit and relax. The hotel also runs ‘The Cub Club’, an activities club for children staying with their families. All 406 rooms are family friendly with their own kitchens and spread out living. The great Wolf lodge is the perfect place to spend your Canadian getaway.
