When we think about Hawaiʻi and a cocktail, what comes to mind?
The Blue Hawaiʻi cocktail was created in 1957 in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. It was invented by Harry Yee, a legendary bartender at the resort.
The story goes that a sales representative from the Dutch distillery Bols approached Yee and asked him to create a drink that featured their new product, Blue Curaçao—a bright blue, orange-flavored liqueur. Yee crafted a tropical cocktail combining rum, vodka, blue curaçao, pineapple juice, and sweet and sour mix. He named it “Blue Hawaiʻi” after the 1937 Bing Crosby film – not the Elvis Presley movie, which came later in 1961.
Want to make one for yourself while you book your next trip to Hawaiʻi?
Don’t forget about to decorate with a flower, pineapple or umbrella.
*For mocktail – simply replace the rum and vodka and use non-alcoholic blue curacao syrup
