New UK Entry Rules for British and Irish Citizens

New UK Entry Rules for British and Irish Citizens

    Comments comments

This information is provided in good faith based on our interpretation of the rules at the time of issue. TravelManagers urges all travellers to check the rules as they apply to them.

From 25 February 2026, British/Irish dual citizens are not permitted to enter the UK using a passport from a different country, such as an Australian passport. They will need to use their valid British/Irish passport or another valid passport containing a certificate of entitlement (COE). This change is likely to catch many travellers unaware, with the risk of heavy consequences, such as denied entry.

While these rules apply to automatic British citizens, they do not apply to people who are eligible to apply for citizenship but haven’t done so. British citizens who have dual citizenship with another country are not permitted to travel on the new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), which was gradually rolled out from November 2023.

If you are planning to travel to the UK/Ireland, discuss your travel requirements and responsibilities with a Personal Travel Manager as they organise your trip.

Alongside keeping you informed of changing travel requirements, TravelManagers Australia has comprehensive financial risk safeguards designed to protect your funds at every stage of your journey, which you can read more about here.
